A Foodie Thursday and In a Mood for Curry Chicken

Here are some of the overdue food posts from the previous week:

23/08/08 -
Before my First Aid assessment on Saturday, I had Curry Chicken Rice (S$6.80) at Hans@Park Mall.

It was supposed to come in a set with dessert and soup with an additional S$3. But I decided to have Curry Chicken Rice alone as I didn't want to have a super filled stomach for my assessment.

The Curry Chicken wasn't that fantastic after all but it was edible. It wasn't too spicy for people who can't really take spicy stuff. Overall, I did enjoy the meal.

21/08/08 - Before we headed to the Esplanade Theatre for a class excursion (yes, it does exist at this point of time), my classmates and I had lunch at a noodle shop at Fortune Centre. I am always in favour of eating noodles than eating rice during lunch and that is when I begin to ponder about my heritage.

I ordered Minced Meat Mushroom Soup Noodles (S$3) as I was craving for something soupy. Sadly, the soup failed to exude the meatiness and the mushroom flavour.

My classmate, Pet ordered her Deep Fried Wanton Noodles (S$3).

My other classmate, Sage ordered an extra plate of Fried Wanton (S$3). Pet commented that the accompanied dipping sauce, Mayonnaise was too diluted, thus, it compromised the taste.

After the excursion trip, I went over to get a printer ink for my printer at Brash Basa Road. Instead of taking a public transport, I decided to walk to that place from Esplanade. It was a arduous journey. Once I bought my desired printer ink, my stomach starting growling once again. So I went over to my favourite coffeeshop at Purvis Street to have my usual Coffee and Toast (S$2). The toast came in a form of a small bun spread with Kaya and Butter. Yummy.

In the evening, my family and I sent my brother off to the airport as he will be away for 2 weeks. After the sending off, we received a packet of goodies from our kind neighbour. One of the goodies was the Ang Ku Kueh. This kueh comes in a shape of a tortoise shell and the filling inside is either peanut or yellow beans.

I have always enjoy eating the yellow beans than the peanut filling. I ate about two of those that night. I guess I was too ravenous.

The Long John Silver's Meal, First Aid Course and Gathering

16/08/08
- On Saturday, I had to wake up super early again on a weekend to attend the Standard First Aid Course. As much as I hate to forgo my beauty sleep over the weekend, I still have to drag myself up to attend the class. It was interesting to see new classmates from all walks of life besides your classmates, attending this life-saving course. We learnt various kinds of bandages and why we ought to save lives. In order to graduate from the course, it is compulsory for everyone to attend two classes before taking the practical test on the third day. There goes my weekend.

During our lunch break, we headed to Long John Silver's. There was an ongoing promotion called WRAP-VOLUTION! and I thought to myself, perhaps, I should try this meal. So I ordered the Mango Fish Wrap which comes with fries and drinks (S$4.80).

Inside the pita bread wrap was two pieces of fish fillet, smeared with mango sauce, lettuce and diced tomates.

I like the fries as well because of the way they battered the fries.

When the first lesson of my first aid class ended, I met up with my old classmates for dinner at Spageddies@Paragon. Since it was a weekend, I made a reservation just in case all the tables are being snapped up like hotcakes. But when my friend, Maryann and I went to the place at 7pm, it was half-empty. I surmised the customers will start queuing outside the restaurant after 8pm.

After studying the menu, I ordered Chicken Cannelloni (S$14). Originally, I wanted to order wood-fires pizza but I was afraid that I couldn't finish the portion. The Chicken Cannelloni was not too bad. It came in two large Cannelloni shell and inside the shell, it was stuffed with chicken, spinach, and onions. On the top of the Cannelloni shell was alfredo sauce and mozzarella cheese. Among the cheese family, I love the mozzarella cheese, especially the buffalo mozzarella cheese.

Here is another angle of the Chicken Cannelloni.

When we finished our main meal, Jo thought of eating dessert at Canele Patisserie Chocolaterie. But before that, we went for a walk to ease our filled stomachs. We went shopping for a while and also do some sight-seeing. At around 9 plus, we headed to the newly-opened Shaw Centre outlet. Unfortunately, it was so packed when we went that we were the six customers on the waiting list! Even after we went for a short window shopping, we still didn't manage to get a table. Well, we could only blame ourselves for not reserving a table earlier. In the end, we had our cakes takeway and ate it at the nearby McCafe.

I had my usual Raspberry and Hazelnut macaroons (S$2.30 ea). They were heavenly!

J2 had Jupiter cake ($7). When I first tasted it, it had a mixture of bitter chocolates and sour filling. So when I had a small bite, it was weird.

Despite the insane price the cakes at Canele, the quality of it remains the consistently - good.

Laksa

15/08/07 - As we didn't have afternoon class last Friday, some of my classmates went over to a coffeeshop near our school to have Laksa (S$3.50). Bowls of laksa came in pippin hot and fiery on our table the moment we put our butts on the seat. Depending on one's preferences, some had their Laksa with cockles and while others had it without prawns and vegetables. But I like mine without cockles (also known as "Hum") I don't really like the weird taste of this particular seafood.

The Laksa is the Nonya-style laksa, not the usual foodcourt kind of laksa where the stallholders will throw in fishballs, tau pok, eggs and etc. It is purely nonya-style with only fishcakes, prawns and beansprouts (also known as tau kay). The rice floor noodles are all cut into smaller strips where customers don't have to use chopsticks to eat the noodles. However, the price for this simple bowl of Laksa is not cheap.

I'm finally back!

A dear friend of mine told me over the internet messenger last week that I haven't been updating my food blog. She knew the discrepancies because she has been viewing this blog for some new posts and see some new food pictures but nothing has been updated! I am so sorry! These days, I'm tied up with assignments after assignments.

But anyhow, I am going to recap of all the food that I have eaten since I last blogged in. Hold your horses. New posts are coming right up!

Ma La Noodles

For my lunch break today, I had Ma La Noodles (S$4.50) from Banquet at 101 Plaza. This is the first time I'm trying a bowl of spicy noodles. The reason why I plucked out my courage to eat this lethal and spicy noodles was because I saw a classmate of mine, munching a bowl of noodles (a different flavour, of course) from this same stall last week. Well, Nam once asked me if I have food envy. I think I have.

On the surface of the soup noodles was littered with chilli peppercorns, peanuts, ikan bilis and some funny vegetables. Initially, I thought it was nothing and decided to gulp down the soup. Little then I know that the next minute, I was coughing like mad. Lesson learnt: I should drink the soup slowly in future and not be too gungho.

Hence, I coughed as I ate my noodles. In the end, I didn't finish my soup.

National Day Meals

On National Day, I had Nasi Briyani (S$4) for lunch at a coffeeshop at Telok Blangah/Mount Faber Housing Estate. As much as it was a public holiday, I still had a meeting to attend at my friend's place. So the host, Aaron brought the three of us - Annabelle, Dawn and I to his favourite food hangout which is an Indian Muslim Coffeeshop for a plate of spicy Nasi Briyani.

Coincidentally, everyone ordered Chicken Nasi Briyani and when the food arrived on our table, all the chicken looked differently. Some came in chicken wing portion while the others came in chicken thigh portion. For me, it was the chicken wing portion. The food portion was quite reasonable. It came with brinjal as the side dish and the chicken came in a quarter, not half. The rice was fluffy and fragrant. But the chicken tasted a little salty.

The person also gave us an additional plate of curry for us to pour over our fluffy rice but I did so with only a few spoonfuls of it.

For drinks, I ordered Teh Tarik (approx. S$1). It was neither too sweet nor bland.

In the evening, my mum prepared chicken rice for us as we sat down to watch the National Day Parade on TV. The chicken she used was the old chicken and in order to appreciate it, it requires an acquired taste. Usually, old chickens are used to make soup stock for shark fin soups or other kinds of soups. Subsequently, my mum gave me all the chicken breast meat for me to eat, instead of the thighs or drumsticks.

My plate of chicken breast meat.

My mum also cooked Chap Chye which is actually a stir-fried mixed vegetables filled with cabbage, fungus mushroom, tanghoon and etc.

Weird Thursday - Carrot Cake and Chewy Cream Puff

After our lighting class today, my classmates and I decided to grab lunch before our next class starts at 12pm. We went over to Kopitiam at Golden Wall Centre and since most of the stalls aren't open, we just ordered whatever food which was available.

I had Fried Carrot Cake (S$3.50) but it wasn't really good. I am getting concerned with the food at the foodcourt these days. It seems like the food standard has dropped drastically and there is no saving grace in it. Hence, I began to have fear in eating food from foodcourts.

Later in the day, I bought a Strawberry Cheesecake Cream Puff (S$1.30) from Chewy Junior at Bugis Junction. It's a newly-opened stall and there are about 15 sweet flavours to choose from. The cream puff is similar to the Beard Papa's cream puff, however, it's smaller in size. There wasn't many people queuing at the stall when I went there. Thankfully! I scanned through the window and pondered about my order. Eventually, I choose the Strawberry Cheesecake Cream Puff.

On top of the small puff, there was cream cheese and strawberry jam with two slices of strawberry fruits.

When I bite into the puff, the sweet custard cream just oozed out. Yummy! However, the cheese and the strawberry jam don't really compliment each other. I kind of regretted choosing it. I realised I should have ordered the Chocolate Madness or Strawberry Dream.

Oh, the puff is chewy, hence, the name Chewy Junior!

Prawn Noodles

Today I had Prawn Noodles Soup (S$4.00) from Ah Hui Prawn Noodles Stall at Longhouse for my lunch. It comes with four pieces of fresh medium-sized prawns but they sliced each prawns into half. Well, it actually helps me, who doesn't like peeling prawns in public, to eat the prawns in ease. To spice things up, I poured some chilli powder - which is fried with a mixture of dried prawns and red chillies together under some time- onto my bowl of soup. As a result of my greediness, the soup became too spicy that I ended up drinking and eating half of the soup noodles.

Since school started on Monday, I realised I haven't updated my food blog for close to a week and due to the fact that I frequently forgot to take pictures of the food I ate during my lunch break. So, I made a note to myself that I better remember to take some good food pictures the next time round.
